CHAPTER 6
A few hours later, as they laidin each other’s arms, Mickey realized Tabby had dozed off. Her mind started to wander and she thought back to the day they had bumped into Tabby’s mother on the strip. As mean and nasty as that woman had been then, she could only imagine how bad it was when Tabby was a child. To grow up in a home where your own mother treated you like that must have been horrible. But yet, looking at Tabby, you would never know. She was sweet, kind, and always cheerful. She seemed to like people as much as Mickey liked animals.
Mickey then started thinking about her own childhood and how horrible it had been. Her parents seemed to have hated her, nothing she ever did pleased them enough to keep them from beating her. For a long time, she believed she was worthless and stupid. Her parents, especially her mother, had told her that she was God’s punishment to them for being sinners. Then when she went to the group home and things didn’t get better, she wondered many times if she should do everyone a favor and kill herself.
While she was wrapped up in her memories, Tabby opened her eyes. She had not really been sleeping, just thinking about what the future held now that she had the woman of her dreams. She looked up at Mickey and realized there were tears in Mickey’s eyes. Concerned, she sat up on the bed.
“Mickey hun, what’s wrong? Surely the sex wasn’t that bad?”
Mickey realized herself that her eyes were watering and reached up to wipe them. Before she could however, Tabby kissed both of her eyes. Mickey looked up at her and smiled.
“No way.The sex was wonderful. It’s just that my mind started wandering into the past. I’m fine, I promise.”
Tabby looked doubtful for a second and then smiled back at her.“Would you like to talk about it? Sometimes, when something is very painful, it really helps to let it out. I promise I won’t run away, no matter how bad it is.”
Mickey hesitated. She wasn’t sure if she could handle talking about it. She looked at Tabby and could see that she really wanted to help. She decided to go ahead.
“Well, I was thinking about how hateful your mother was to you and how she reminded me of my mother and father. They hated me too. They believed I was born as a punishment from God for some sin they had committed. They never would tell me about it, what it was that I was there to punish them for. I wonder if it would have made things any better, knowing. It might have made it worse. My bedroom was a small room in the basement that had a cot in it and one worn out comforter.”
Mickey took a deep breath, let it out and looked at Tabby again. She seemed very interested, so Mickey gathered up the courage to go on.
“Every day, I could guarantee I would feel the switch or belt across my back or legs.
